The Inca peoples based much of their year on the lunar calendar, made possible by Mama Quilla, or Mama Killa. In addition to being the goddess of the moon she was also revered as a champion of womanhood, presiding over marriage, childbirth, and even coming of age. Many surviving stories of Mama Quilla pertain to how the moon came to be, and just how and why lunar events came to pass!
